Where can I find information on different roles within the media? I'd like a career in that area but everyone I speak to says I need to be a lot more specific about what I'm looking for - the only problem is nobody seems to be able to tell me about diffferent roles! I'm starting to feel as though continuing in education in the area is fairly pointless and looking for some actual experience but again it's almost impossible to break into as everyone wants experience, and I'm not clued-up enough to be able to enquire specifically.

trouble is, there are lots of roles and lots of people wanting those roles, so randomly looking for something won't get you very far.
you need to assess what your skills are and what you want to become and then ask again - looking at a list of jobs and ticking off the ones you think sound good will not work otherwise everyone would be doing it.

in terms of experience, unfortunately you will have to spend some time doing unpaid work experience.
its unfair but unfortunately that seems to be the way it is in this industry - you will need some kind of relevant qualification, because there is a lot of competition and they will want someone with a basic knowledge of the industry

media covers lots of things tv radio pr advertising film magazines etc you need to focus what your skills are and what area you are passionate about as you do have to love it. I worked in tv production for a few years its very competitive bitchy at times long hours etc but fun but to earn lots of money is not easy - a head of a department in say BBC with years and years of experience would not earn what you could get in private sector in other careers and freelance is so unreliable and does come down to who you know and contacts and you could have lots of gaps in employment early on in your career - you would also definitely have to do unpaid work experience to get in tv

Oh don't worry I know I'll have to do unpaid work experience and am more than willing to do so! The problem with that was that I had absolutely no idea where to start looking, offering my services etc. I've got a bit more of a general idea now anyway, thanks everyone!

try and get a job as a runner somewhere write to all the places you want to work if you want tv look for the producer or director on your favourite show and write to them but have loads of ideas etc ready for them and good luck
