Can anyone tell me how I can get rid of the smell of gas from an empty propane cylinder? The cylinder is empty and has no trace of gas in it. It has been purged several times with water and the tap/valve has been removed and a 40mm hole cut in the top. I have tried steaming the smell away and soaked it in a strong bleach solution but still the stench of gas prevails.

This isn't an answer, but why on earth are you keeping an old gas cylinder?
My thoughts exactly, secretspirit. Except they are valuable but not with a hole cut into it!
The gas itself does'nt smell of anything its the stenching agent they add to gas that smells try replacing the smell with another one pour milk in it and leave it a couple of days now theres a smell for you!!
doesn't charcoal grab and absorb smells?? Have u tried emptying a sack of charcoal into it and covering it over for a while???? I wonder would it work...
oh so you're cutting up a bottle that doesn't belong to you.(they're rented)
Yes norfolk boy, but for the deposit you pay for your first full one you could probably buy several empties from the manufacturer.
you can get them from the local recycling center for a fiver ; often half full . that will keep the patio heater going all summer. yeah why do you want to keep it for ?is it to grow strawberries in it?
