several times a week a message balloon appears from windows defender saying an application registration change was made to a known application
C:\Program files\Windows Defender\MpCmRun.exe
has anybody any idea what the hell this is and what it means, many thanks vinovin

This is nothing to worry about.

It is your Windows Defender programme trying to install a scheduled maintenance run, so it runs every day automatically.

You really should allow it.
