Plumbing air lock

How do I eliminate air in the system - loud noise on flushing downstairs loo & running cold tap at adjacent sink? Do I need a man?!

That's two very diferent questions and I think the latter is beter placed in the body and soul section (though I'm available :>)....anyways if it had been a heating system then I could have seen an easy way round this but I don't think it's air in the system as the toilet is an open ended system i.e. when youflush the cistern fills and any trapped air can escape also the same with the tap so I would say (and friend who works for a water company agrees) that it's much more likely to be a water pressure issue....do you live very near a reservior or pumping station? If so and your DIY is up to it you could fit a Pressure Reducing Valve....alternately get a couple of plumbers in for an opinion but don't pay anything up front!

sft42 - if you're anywhere near Salisbury, come on round and listen for yourself! Funnily enough, I don't think it's happened this afternoon, though - perhaps posting the question has done the trick!!!!

It's knowen as "water hammer" and is caused when there is a sudden increase in pressure. Before trying to fit a prv or calling in a plumber, you could try just closing the valve down a bit where the water enters your property. This might work if you're lucky, it just depends on how bad the problem is. Or, is the water coming from a tank in your loft? If it is then there should be a valve when the water exits the tank. Try closing it down a bit.

SFT is a Glasgow boy so sorry not near you at all....if you have old style valves then as skelly suggests slightly closing them might work...Good Luck with it.

If you have a hot and cold mixer tap anywhere turn both on and stick your finger in the tap - the cold water at a higher pressure will flush the hot pipes of any trapped air

... and the hot water will burn your finger. But its worth it (im probably wrong but :] )
