Is there ANY way of tracing a received call that comes up as "private number"? I know this means either that the person is deliberately withholding their ID, or that they are calling from an unlisted landline. It's not nuisance calls or anyrthing so I won't be involving the police. Is there anything my network can tell me?
Thanks, I've emailed my network so maybe they'll get back to me eventually. RJA I get what you're saying about a caller's right to withhold their number. But it's so annoying! They just rang, I answered, and they listened for a minute and then hung up. Whoever it was rang to find out who was answering my number... and I don't like that! Anyway it's no big deal but if it happens more than once I'd consider it a nuisance. Thanks for the answers guys!
I know my sister had this problem a while back.Someone was phoning her phone but she kept missing the calls and they were coming up as private number. When she phoned her server who happens to be o2 they told her that because it wasn't a nuisance phone call they couldn't give her the number as it was against the Law.
The problem is if they are using a prepaid phone whereby the network operator won't have any details of who owns it. So even if the number did show up, they might not be able to tell you who is ringing.
Thanks for all the suggestions. You're all correct --here's the reply I got from my network:
Thank you for your email and your query. I can confirm that I have spoken

I can also confirm that my relevant colleagues have advised me that under
