There were two kings of England who were known as James. There were five kings of Scotland known as James. James II of England was also James VI of Scotland.

James was the name of six Scottish and two English kings. King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England when he suceeded Queen Elizabeth I.This does not take into account the Old Pretender who styled himself King James III of England after the death of his father.
