When I try to open a Word file I've suddenly started getting the following message: 'Please wait while windows configures ccCommon' Does anyone know what this means? All of a sudden I can't open my saved files. Help appreciated. Thanks.

ccCommon could suggest a problem with Norton Internet Security / Anti - Virus. Do you use Norton? Try disabling it and see if you still have a problem. If not try removing it and re-installing.

Try re-installing and removing again. I'm sure you did it properly last time but make sure you use Add / Remove programs or the Norton installation disk to uninstall the software.
