I'm no expert but my wife and I have done a little travelling around the USA and Canada. I would say your first requirement is a good guide book, and for me Lonely Planet is the best. As for money, you'll need a lot - especially now the pound has weakened - but it will probably depend on how you're travelling. If you're driving, you can find fairly cheap motels in the country and on the outskirts of towns - say $40 per night. But if, like us, you're planning on using buses and trains, and have to stay in city hotels, then the very cheapest may be over $70 p.n. Incidentally, remember that almost all prices quoted in the States, including accommodation, are before tax, which varies from location to location, and can add ten or more percent. Bon Voyage.
