should i get a strange smell from a new gas fire?

daisy, you might get a slight smell as the fire heats up, it is only the newness of it,but it should go after a few days, if it doesn't get it checked, but all should be ok.
Sometimes the paint residues or dust burning off. Lasts a day or so.
For safety's sake buy a carbon monoxide detector. A friend of mine decided no to do so and is left with a permanent brain injury.
