It depends what car you have, some have to have a very specific grade of oil in them or you will wreck the engine.
Check in the manual and see what it says. Most modern diesels need quite high spec/semi synthetic oils.

However, FYI, my owner's manual says that for small amounts IE just topping up, you can use 'ordinary' oil. As I recall, up to half a litre in total.
well im working with a bloke who fills his car up at lidls with veggie oil. but it does stink of chip fat
i dont think turbo deisels work on it tho

Thanks everyone, there is some oil you can put in petrol & diesil, you need a specific oil for diesil turbo i just found out thanks P
