engine stalling

On my 2L Vauxhall Vectra (R Reg) when slowing down, the oil light comes on and engine stalls every time. There is ample oil in the engine, and it starts again very easily, but it has no idling speed whatsoever. The engine has been well serviced and maintained and has only done 85000 miles. As my auto knowledge is sadly lacking, any suggestions would be appreciated before I take it in for its next service. Throgmorton

Where the cable from the accelerator pedal joins the throttle butterfly near the inlet manifold, there is an adjuster that sets the rest position of the butterfly, and thus the idling speed of the engine. That adjuster is usually a screw, and is call the throttle stop. Your symptoms sound like the throttle stop has moved (screw fallen out?) When the engine slows down to less than its normal idling speed (800 rpm or so) the oil pressure will fall, and the light come on. Worth getting someone who knows their way around an engine to have a quick look, if you are not comfortable with trying yourself.

sounds to me to be the idle stabilising valve.....common on vectras to give trouble-it will either do as this or rev up. it should be at the top of the engine, has a couple of pipes to it and a plug. simply cleaning it of gunge should do the trick, although a vauxhall garage will replace and charge over �300!
