Hello Amelioratio, Saturday's crossword is not always as difficult as this week's - it depends who sets it and Egnimatist is a bit of a puzzler.
I thought 4 down was eponym but if it is Here we go, the only word I can get to fit in is Evelyn which fits "male or female" but I cannot see the rest of the clue.

I settled on creche. I have Evelyn for 4d

Eve(n) (not odd ) + Lyn (n) ...Name (n) dropping = Evelyn

male or female name ie Evelyn Waugh.
