I had a knee replacement done under a local at Bupa whilst I remained wide awake! The operation site was shielded from my view though although I could hear everthing, talk to the surgeon and felt? the tugging and pulling.
It will probably depend upon your seurgeon and the type of operation too though.
You can but ask the surgeon for his/her vew.
