Visiting NYC
8 Answers
Me and my girlfriend are looking to visit nyc for the first time in April, we are looking for any advice for our trip, i.e we live near Birmingham airport and the only flights from here fly to Newark. Is it easy to get to nyc from here? What are good hotels in a good location? What are the best things to do when we are there? We will be there for sight seeing, shopping and maybe a show on Broadway. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance

We went beginning of year and took the train from newark to penn station lots of helpful staff at both locations.... travellling on the subway is easy for all sightseening and staff are available to help
booking the hotel prior to trip may be advisable to avoid walking around looking for a vacancy
lots of things to do and see..... make a list of what you want to do eg...bloomingdales. empire state. statue of liberty...central park..we did that and didn't stick to all of it lol
tickets for shows are often sold cheaper in times square dont know how much or for what shows as the queues were too long
good luck on your trip .

I been to NYC and best area to base yourself is Manhatten if you want a cheap well located hotel but basic its opposite Madison Square Garden its called the Pennysylvania and it available on octopustravel.com also for a lovely hotel is the Hudson hotel which is pricey but very nice rooms but they are small though good restaurant there and nice bar on roof quite trendy
You cant beat the Marriot Marquis hotel on Broadway/ Times Square, they do have weekend deals also. Its where Arnie rode the white horse through the hotel in True Lies, their reception is on the 7th floor because there is a theatre underneath, and their steak house serves steaks to die for !couldnt get more central than that ask for a room overlooking Broadway, though you are "miles up" there as always life down there in the street.
Another nice friendly hotel is the Doral Court though not so central but they have an all night deli across the street.
We queued up early for the cheap theatre tickets and only waited 30 mins, just same amount of time as the shack in Leicester SQ in London.

Have a great time, a couple of things to do are obviously empire state building, but go up it at night time, incredible, you can pay a bit more to go right to the top of it,well worth doing, also get a day and night ticket for the tour bus, brooklyn bridge on the night tour is amazing, Greenwich village is great, and if you like blues music, BB King has a club just off of times square is really good, There is a sculpture near ground zero that is very humbling it was in one of the twin towers, and it has a permanent light burning, also take the ferry over to statue of liberty and ellis island, your feet will ache like hell with all the walking, I would also take a carriage ride through central park, good luck, Ray
We've just booked for new york and managed to get a flight from liverpool (england) to new york for 247 each (taxes included) you can pick up the link from www.skyscanners.co.uk or go direct to the web site www.flyglobespan.com.
business class which we opted for was 510 each but is still only the same price as economy with BA.
If you chexk skyscanners first you'll probably find they go from east midlands too - which is nearer you!
For hotels Ive been looking on hotels-comparison.co.uk which gives you loads and also compares prices from the different companies including octupus and bookings.
good luck and have a fantastic trip! (we will)

Depends how much you want to spend on a hotel (bearing in mind most US hotels are room only), but if you're not on a strict budget we found the Warwick on West 54th Street good value and handily placed, between 5th Ave & Broadway and a very short stroll from MOMA. If it was good enough for The Beatles......
I stayed at the Wolcott Hotel, which I booked thru their own website as it was cheaper that way than thru Expedia (just Google Wolcott New York, should come up with the website). I think it was about 100 a night for a triple room, and nice and central. If you get the train from Newark airport, you will go to Penn St station, and the hotel is a short walk from there. If you want to see a show on Broadway, there is a booth just off Times Square that sells cut price tickets for shows that day, well worth visiting. Also, try to get some books on New York from your library and read up about what to do and see well before you go. You must go on the Staten Island ferry, its a free commuter ferry, but passes close by the Statue of Liberty. Loads of people travel on it then just catch the next one back.
