London new years eve fireworks spectacular......whatever happened to saving the planet
Who paid for that fireworks show. How much did it cost. How much carbon dioxide did it spew. So saving the earth is a fashionable thing to say is it....to raise taxes...but when it is fun time we ignore the planet??

Regarding the cost or the fall out, just a drop in the ocean compared to what is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But why London gets all these perks thats another question.

It amazes me how some people can walk straight past charity box collectors as if they don't exist & into shops to spend 's on fireworks that only last a few seconds!
Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see some of these amazing firework displays, but have to agree with saxy - the money spent on some of these damp squibs could help others.
I also understand your frustrations too AOG!

Oh dont be such a killjoy , Dom Tuk - what is wrong in celebrating the new year in this way - compared to what else is happening on the planet ?
Should we get rid of community leisure facilities , libriares , musuems etc ?
Afterall - they also cost money and are non essential to our survival .
Is your new years resolution to go about your business , without making use of nasty polluting vehicles - and to refrain from buying any more mod cons , which are made , using wasteful polluting processes ?

You could say lets stop any form of celebration in this country if money has to be spent because there is always a worthy cause waiting in the wings with a better use for the money. Maybe we should stop xmas lights and everything else for our entertainment. Lets get a bit of a sense of balance here. Money is spent in all areas but that doesnt mean things like this shouldnt happen. It would be a poorer country if we stop displays of celebration like this wouldnt it? I for one thought the fireworks were spectacular and its nice to see something like this for our people to see in a New year!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the display too! It's the 1st time I've enjoyed firework's for years and I did'nt feel guilty as I gladly give to charity's of my choice monthly. Not a lot,but every little helps as they say. Cardiff put on a good display and a concert. We were watching the display in London and listening to the concert at the same time:-)) A Happy New Year All.
Must just say - I didn't mean firework displays should be stopped in aid of giving the money spent to charity instead......I said it's amazing how some people willingly spend hundreds of 's on fireworks, but wouldn't dream of giving to charity!
The London display was indeed spectacular - only wish I could have been there to capture the colours & sounds!
Happy & Healthy 2007 to all.

Yes, that makes perfect sense to me Dom!
Reminds me of when we got married - my Mum gave us all the best advice ever - pay your rent/mortgage, general bills & buy food - then if there's anything left over the rest speaks for itself.....!
It's something we've always done to keep a roof over our heads & our heads above water.

Oh dear Dom Tuk no wonder no one understands your question, in actual fact if one reads your origional question it was in fact it consisted of 6 questions.
1/ Whatever happened to...............?
2/ Who paid for................?
3/ How much did it .................?
4/ How much carbon................?
5/ So saving the earth...............?
6/ but when it is fun..................?
Confused or what, are you bothered about the cost in money or the cost to the Planet?
Answers to both, if it provided enjoyment to the masses in this ever increasing dull world, worth every penny.
Don't bother too much about this very minute fall out, I refer you to my first answer.

divegirl, I agree with the fact that London is the capital of this country. But does this mean it should get all the perks, that all our taxes pay equally for?
Do you also seriously believe that it will only be London that pays towards the Olympics, when the final inflated costs come rolling in? I don't think so somehow.
And do you also think that congestion charges wil be in the future unique to London.
