Applied for a job, did the interview etc and it all went really well. Expected to be offered the job even though it is a massive step down for me.

Needless to say they didnt offer me the job and I think it was one of two things....

Bad reference - or - overqulaified

anyway, I'd like to find out.

do they have to tell me the reason for rejection?

thanks

Well they don't have to tell you, but most (decent) organisations will provide feedback.
I would approach this as - I'm obviously very disappointed not to get the job but would really appreciate some feedback to help me the next time.
it may have been that the person to whom you would be reporting felt that their job may be threatened by your superior qualifications. Take courage, and try again.

Been there done that for the past few years after being made redundant.

I have had a few arguments with recruitment agencies as well because they will not even submit my CV saying "You are overqualified for the job!" to which I reply "Well, I can do the job so what is the problem?" Stony silence.

It could also be a bit of age discrimination as well despite the new legislation.

But keep on trying - approach companies direct as well.

Cheers and good luck.
You are not alone with this!
I have been looking for new employment since September 2006 and to date have been for 11 interviews.
I have asked for feedback after some of them and have been told the following:-
You were too nervous and didnt answer as well as some of the other applicants
You were too over qualified and would be bored in our job
We choose someone who had slightly more experience in our line of work than you.

I am still a great believer that my age goes against me - am now in my middle 40's! I know this should not be the case but you just get the feeling!

Keep trying and applying - like someone recently told me with the law of averages you have to be offered a new job eventually!!!

Good luck to you!
