Is it overflowing and filling up too much ? The sump switch is found in the bottom of the dishwasher chamber and is usually circular in appearance, it may need a good push up and down and a clean with a bottle brush. You could invest in some dishwasher cleaner and see if that shifts it ?
Progress of the cycle timer would not necessary be required for the sump to fill and be sensed at which time the timer motor would allow the next step to proceed. The main drive motor would also be required at this stage. The problem could be a frozen timer or faulty connection within or from/to the cycle timer or timer motor? Just an idea.
Is this a Bosch/ Siemens one? As I used to have a problem with a magnetic float that was located in the filter area, it use to have to be wiped on the bottom to function properly, it was like a little plastic barrel casing a magnet, there was a circular bit next to the big filter (about the size of a two pence - lift off - clean the base of barrel - pop it back. Bob's yer uncle. To clean my dishwasher I use Milton bleach tabs ( 2 ) on a empty run maintenance cyle. Works a treat for me.
