passport validity

I'm traveling to USA from Britain and I am wondering how much time does my passport need to be valid.
I was told 6 months after I return from USA is this right or is the time scale different

Some people will tell you 6 months (especially paranoic tour operators) but the actual answer is that it just needs to be valid to the end of your stay.

dzug is right. they only tell you to have 6 months left is if you fall ill and need to stay longer then you have plenty left your passport.
