holes in my elbows

in the last 6 months i have had to throw away about 12 tops because they have developed holes in the elbows - can anyone suggest a reason for this strange phenomena?! I work at a pc and don't lean on my elbows when i'm using it. They could be rubbing on a seam in my coat but its mostly work tops that are holey and i only wear my coat morning and evening for 15 minutes.
its costing me a fortune in work tops its happening on tops of all materials and all ages - any ideas?!!

pagey - Is the skin on your elbows rough? My husband has ruined several pairs of socks with very dry skin on his heels. If this is a problem, just exfoliate & use a good moisturiser (E45) lotion.
