Tried all my dictionaries but can't find this non-cryptic one
4d - Of a landscape,scene, etc. pleasing , cheering or attractive.
It might be a Scotish word

How many letters?

Sorry ! In my hurry to get this posted I forgot the most important bits.

(5 letters) I've got R_A_T so far
Riant means happy, smiling, merry etc - closest I can get: assuming all your letters are right?

"RIANT" was my best guess as well but it didn't seem quite close enough. I'm still going to go for it however.
I've only ever heard of people being described as riant, never landscapes! Not sure how a landscape can really smile, but there you go...

That's true Qizmonkey but we Scots have some very funny words that even most of us don't know the meaning of.
By the way , the weather here today is dreich.
