Mike. - Nato alphabet / Mike 'Mooch' Cacciatore fromTV sitcom Wiseguy.
Question Author
Tk u v much Kettledrum - I couldn't see the reason for any of the possibilities (having never watched Wiseguy).
Nor have I !
Frankly, I can't imagine Jonathan Crowther ever having watched it either.

Same thought occurred to me, Doctor John, but he does use the NATO alphabet sometimes. Even so, it strikes me as not up to his usual clueing standards. I'll say so when I send in my entry!
The reference is to the definition of 'to mike' in Chambers: to loiter idly (= to mooch).
Question Author
Tks Quizmonkey - apols to Mr Crowther, I see it now
Well spotted, QM. I really couldn't imagine JC putting his feet up in front of an 80s crime show (or expecting anybody solving Azed to have done).
Thank goodness you spotted the mike / loiter connection, Quizmonkey. Like everyone else on here I thought it seemed extraordinarily unlikely viewing for Jonathan Crowther - ( I, personally hadn't even heard of it before finding the character on google) - but nothing better sprung to mind.
