The original (1969) was by Three Dog Night. It was written by Harry Nilssen.

Sorry, have only ever heard Aimee's version and, given that she does write most of her songs, had assumed she had written this too. You learn something new every day!

I only knew that 'cos i was given a Best Of Three Dog Night album in with a box of CD's for a jumble sale over Christmas!!! :o)

It actually originally featured on Harry Nilsson's 1968 album Aerial Ballet before becoming covered by Three Dog Night and, perhaps most famously, Aimee Mann for the Magnolia soundtrack. The title is simply 'One'.
