You can have them both installed and even run them at the same time with no adverse effects.

you can even get an add-on in Firefox that lets you open pages in Internet Explorer (but within Firefox). Firefox is far superior - but keep IE as some webpages require it.

Just to agree with the above, as I type this I have both browsers running and they both work fine!
