New York for christmas

I'm currently thinking of taking my wife and 8 year old daughter to New York for a long weekend NEXT christmas (crimbo 07)

The plan would be to go over for 4 days and arrive home on christmas eve.

But i know nothing about the prices etc or where i could stay etc. The holiday would be just for sight-seeing and taking in the wonderful New York christmas atmosphere.

Any help, websites, approx prices etc etc would be very welcome

I had a short trip for 4 days last Jan, it was fab. I stayed at the Wolcott Hotel, which is a budget hotel in midtown Manhattan. It's an older hotel, but very clean and the decor is beautiful, all marble and gold. In that area, you are right in the middle of everything - the Empire State is just round the corner, Broadway is about 15 minute walk away. Unfortunately, the prices go up in December and thats why I left my trip until January. You just won't be able to see everything in 4 days. I enjoyed it so much though, I am returning next September for a fortnight!

Suggest you look at packages with www.lastminute.com - they always use good central hotels - check out the hotels they name on www.tripadvisor.com
NY at Christmas is magical - lights are fantastic, shopping is great and there is an ice skating rink outside the Rockerfeller center...
It is easy to get around- cabs are plentiful and cheap and the tube [subway] is also very good and speedy. It will be flipping cold though!!! Enjoy

I actually had Christmas Day there once. Had to go outside as the hotel heating packed up and it was freezing... actually about 20 below, with wind chill factor... but fortunately lots of things were open (these day probably more are); we went to a movie in the afternoon and a Broadway show in the evening; in between had dinner at the restaurant that opens out on to the skating rink... forget its name; we had to wait all of 20 minutes for a table and the prices hadn't been put up. But this was 20 years ago, and I have no idea whether any of this still holds true, so posting this just to back up auntiebertie's claim that NYC at Christmas is magical; it was.

I stayed in the wolcott as well, found it clean and well situated within walking distance of most things you would want to visit. It was nothing special but was fine for what we wanted it for and would stay in it again.

We found our deal through expedia.co.uk, and paid less than �500 for direct flights, 6 nights accommodation (including breakfast).

I also stayed at the Wolcott Hotel, which I booked thru their own website as it was cheaper that way than thru Expedia (just Google Wolcott New York, should come up with the website). I think it was about �100 a night for a triple room, and nice and central. Look at Expedia for flights, but also the airline companys own websites.

Chazza - what time of year did you go - sounds like a great deal, looking to take my other half this year but am on a bdget and �500 is fantastic!!
