In Northern Ireland, the M1 motorway stops near the town of Dungannon.

Why does it declassify into an A road at the place it does?

the M1 was completed in its entirety as planned in 1968, the only NI motorway not to have been curtailed by funding shortages. Junction 15 was the end of the road until the A4 Dungannon by-pass was built in the 1980s, and the road under the bridges was derelict until that time. The A4 is expected to be dualled as far as Ballygawley, and work may start later this year.

And boy does the A4 need dualling!

Travelled recently from Belfast to Sligo, and the contrast in the quality of the roads either side of the border was staggering.

M1 : brilliant

N16 into Sligo : much improved

but the stretch from Enniskillen over the border : horrific
though admittedly scenic by day I'd guess, but very scary at night.
