it is a certificate type document that you pay for from the criminal records bureau which will certify that you have no known criminal convictions either past or pending (pending i think) in the UK, and it is compulsory to obtain one if you intyend working with children or vulnerable people, most kids at college get one via their personal tutor apparently, my son did.
