my neigbour hates my cats.

she soaks towels in j's fluid then places them along her side of the garden at the front and behind her side of the fence in the back garden to try and stop the cats going over the fence. but the other day she took things to far.

she put carpet gripper (you know all of those little spikes) along the top of the fence seperating our garden from hers. Its not directrly down the middle shes put it slightly towards her side on the top.

we're stuck what shall we do??

Well its her garden i have grippers on mine as well as i hate cats to and it stops them getting in. I dont see your problem keep the cat in your garden!!!
Go to the fence.
Put your hand on the gripper.
Cut yourself slightly.
Sue her - or threaten to. She hasn't a leg to stand on. They'll be removed.

I think you were a mouse in a former life boro1986. I cant control where my cats go and how would you like it if someone put spikes around your house to hurt you.
Thanks whickerman good idea.
The problem is that if you do that, she will retaliate, possibly by putting rat poison in food in her own garden.

Your cats will eat the food.....

Becky h im giving an honest answer a cat tried to smother me when i was little hence why i hate them. Whickerman how can she sue its her nieghbours fence she has been clever and put them on her side
I have the greatest sympathy .... for your neighbour. I'm sick to death with cats in my garden and cr@pping everywhere where my kids play.

There are humane ultrasonic etc devices that you could maybe buy for her to put in her garden as a good will gesture on a condition that the gripper goes. Try to placate her not alienate her or as Ethel says the next step may be poison.

However if it's your fence - you can take them off. If its a joint fence - you can take them off - if it's hers - it's hers. Your cat will only be caught by the gripper once - it will learn and hopefully not bother again - it's not going to repeatedly jump on the fence if it's going to hurt it.

Keep it calm and helpful and neighbourly and all will be well - fall out and things could well get nasty.
Its like putting glass on top of a wall to keep out burglars - you should not do it. You have a duty of care to anyone who comes on your property (invited or not), so deliberately putting something on your own fence which can harm somebody is not allowed.
This applies to the person rather than the cats - but setting out to deliberately hurt a pet is not allowed eithr.
Tubeway glass broken bottles are not allowed grippers are. Not tring to hurt the cat just stopping it getting in and crapping all over their garden. Again cat owner issue
Sorry but I tend to your neighbours's side too. I have bird and squirrel feeders in my garden which give me (and hopefuly them!) a lot of pleasure and I resent cats from both sides using my garden as a leisure centre and litter tray. Until recently I had a cat too but she was an indoor creature, only went out in the evenings and stayed in her own area (I know this because both sets of neighbours were astonished to find that she lived here, they had never seen her around in 9 years) So far I have only used my hose to chase these cats away but have made it clear to the neighbours that they (the cats) are not welcome here.
Putting carpet grippers on a fence is rather silly. If the Police were to pursue a criminal they would not be pleased if there hands were ripped to shreds in the process.

You also have to put up warning notices to prevent yourself from being sued.

Further to this, we have 2 cats and one day one of them was sitting on our shed roof when the moron at the back of us threw a bucket of water at the cat, which was not even on his property.

I turned my hose on and gave him a good soaking in reply. He hasn't done it again!
Well Electrochem i dont think cats can read and why would anyone else wanna get in my garden unless they were up to no good. If a cat was on my property i would throw morw than water at it

Just the sort of reply I would expect from boro 1986.

I do not wish to argue with fools. I stand by what I said.

Cats are no worse than a lot of other animals.

How many times have you fallen over or trod in dog faeces?

reply you expect.... I dont take kindly to been called a fool either. I am as is everyone on here entitled to my opinion. Just because it does not agree with what you believe is neither here or there...........
Electrochem - the difference being dogs are less likely and less able to come into your garden and cr@p on your lawn. The owners of dogs are responsible for their dogs mess the owners of cats are not apparently.

I find a large Super Soaker Works !!! Kept on standby by the patio door, which I have expertly mastered at opening silently and letting go with the full soaking power of an XP 310 !!! I haven't seen a cat or any of its mess since surprising the little get, one October night !
Get yourself a good Jack Russell - they are the best for keeping cats away.
Your neighbour is perfectly within their rights to put the towels soaked in J's fluid down in the garden. They are also entitled to put gripper rod on their side of the fence. However, who owns the fence, you or them. If it is your fence (you or the previous owner erected and you have responsibility for it's upkeep), you can remove the gripper rod as the fence belongs to you. The real problem lies in the fact that you allow your cats to roam wherever they wish. You complain about your neighbour but just put yourself in their shoes. They might not like cats. I have no objections to cats until they come onto my property and crap in the borders, bury it, only for my wife or I to get it on our hands when gardening. The responsibility is firmly at your door.
