Greasy baking tray

I left a baking tray in the oven after I'd used it for oven chips, meaning to take it out when I did the washing up. Unfortunately, I forgot about it, so it was still in the oven when I next turned it on (only realising when the oven was up to temperature and I opened the door). The tray now has a horrible, sticky film on it, but nothing I've done has shifted it. I've tried copius amounts of washing up liquid and pouring boiling water on to cut through the grease but it didn't work.

My oven is also smoky now.... probably also due to keeping a greasy baking tray in the oven... Guess it needs a good clean.

Any ideas on getting rid of the sticky film on the baking tray?

If it is a deep enough tray try putting it on the hob with a small amount of water and some washing powder and bring to a simmer for 10 mins.

I did exactly the same. Save yourself the hassle and buy a new one for a couple of quid...

Got to agree with the previous answer. Also, if you do buy a couple of new trays, try lining them with tin foil every time you cook something in the oven. Saves a lot of washing up. Just replace the tin foil every time you want to cook in the oven.

Or buy a new one and get one of those lining sheets from wilkinsons for �2.50. They act like tin foil but they don't break up when you take them out of the baking tray - you can reuse them loads of times and the food won't stick. I've just bought one and i'm really impressed!

i always line the trays with baking parchment which i find better than tinfoil as its non stick.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll cut my losses, buy a new baking tray and invest in some lining sheets!
