I am posting this again because the other time, I did not get acknowledgement from the Ed. I would like it to be possible to post a new msg simply giving feedback. As it stands now I think it might get deleted for being a non-question. E.g. I have received some helpful replies to a thread I posted. In due course I would like to post a new msg along the following lines: "Thank you X for letting me know about Y and Z. They were both very good although I thought Y had the edge because etc". It's no good appending a msg to my thread as, by the time I have tried Y and Z, my old thread will be way down the list.
I disagree. It would be a bourgeois indulgence. I am not particularly interested in feedback; the answers should speak for themselves. If you want to, just put another answer in the same thread. Then anyone who is still interested can still go back and see.
It is nice to thank people for their effort: heaven knows most people don't bother. Since people can track their own answers through the My Profile facility, it doesn't really matter whether the original question has been lost from the 1st 20 questions. Creating a new question is, I think, unneccessary.
I go back and check threads where I have given answers for exactly that reason, and now we have the subscribe function, its very easy to do. The problem with making a new post that isn't a question is that can it push a legitimate question off the bottom of the list. Now I am going to be my own grandmother and say "just imagine if everybody did it!!"
I tend to agree with j2buttonsw and woofgang: anyone who wants to see if they've been thanked can subscribe to or otherwise check the threads themselves. And with bernardo: public graditude is not why (many people) answer questions. But I don't want Hgrove to think we're all ganging up on him/ her!
