I want to try a registry clean up program and the PC magazine article I read recommends backing up the registry first. How do I back up theegistry in XP SP2

Don't include the registry backup as part of any other backup. This is because very often the problem can be in the registry itself. So you can choose to restore either or both backups depending where you think the problem is.

If you acquire a good registry clean up like Registry Mechanic it will automatically back up the registry for you before it runs.
