i moved house in november and therefore moved authorities, but the other day i received a rather large bill (�250) for council tax up until this february. even though there is now someone else living in my old house. the council say they did not have a forwarding address or contact number to resolve this but how did they manage to send mail to my new address if that was the case. plus all mail from my previous address has been forwarded so they have clearly made no attempt to contact me! in the letter i received from them has already threatened legal action hired goons etc etc. i have proof from my new council that i have been living in there area since november. so where do i stand with all this?

Why did you not tell the old Council you were moving?

Write to them and if possible send proof of you paying at your new address. Ring your Council and ask them if they will speak to the old authority and tell them that you moved there on X date.

i was told that new council will notify old council. it seems that somewhere along the line there was a lack of communication. i do have proof of paying at my new address. as of this moment my old council have agreed to revise a new bill of settlement and have put a stop to any more threats of recovery. perhaps it is a lesson to do all the ringing around myself instead of relying on other people.
