Recently I re-installed the operating system on my Dell Dimension 2400. When I finished, I found that I had lost all data, programs - everything.
When I re-installed Microsoft Works 7.0, the The picture quality is very poor and the colours on the task bar are striped and partly "blotchy". I have tried un-install and re-install but the problem persists.
I have now installed Works 4.5 which seems fine.
Any ideas?
Many thanks.

Sounds as if you haven't installed the motherboard and other drivers. Or if you have, XP has reverted to using the lowest colour depth setting.
Try this:
Right-click a clear area of the desktop
Choose Properties
Click on the Settings tab
Click the drop-down (on the right) for Colour quality
Choose Highest (32 bit)

If this is offered it should solve your problem.

If it's not offered you need to install your drivers.

Thanks you, rojash for putting me on the right track. The problem turned out to be that the program properties was set on 256 colours, after unchecking the box Works 7.0 seems OK.
