The Animals reached the top 10 with this in the 60s.
Yes, it got to Number One in 1964; and I think, at the time, it was the longest record to get to No 1. They nearly didn't release it because they thought radio stations wouldn't play it because it went on too long.
The Animals, first a No 1 UK hit in 1964, then Frijid Pink reached UK no. 4 in 1970. The Animals (from Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK) also re-entered the charts with the same song in 1972 and 1982.
There are dozens of versions of the classic song that gave The Animals their greatest chart success. The most recent is from Animals' lead singer Eric Burdon who has released a live album of Animals and r 'n' b standards. Burdon takes a sideswipe at his fluctuating fortunes as a rock star by calling the album "I Thought He Was Dead!"
