Indie labels combining to take on major labels

Indie labels are planning to join together in an online music sharing system designed to challenge the major labels' stranglehold on downloading. The partnership with Dutch-based company Merlin will look to collectively license a large number of songs from various labels around the world.

With major labels joining forces with online giants such as Napster and iTunes, Merlin is being seen as the Indie labels' chance to fight back.

Independent releases account for 80% of music releases, but only 30% of total revenue. This arrangement will strengthen Indie labels' place in cyberspace and give the public unprecedented access to legitimate downloads.

Does this arrangement represent a positive move in countering the major labels monopoly on downloads?
Or is the internet becoming saturated with downloadable music and Merlin will just blend in with the mass of music out there?
