I was recently watcing the screener for the excorcist movie and I am wondering what "literatim, et verbatim gravoria manent" means. So far I think it means word for word letter for letter suffering or punishment persists....or something like that which makes no sense....some help please!

It is a bit of gothic nonsense, but deriving the latin roots gives a possible English translation of:

In words, and in exactly these words abundant cruelty is handed down from previous generations.

I think a rough translation would be: "Word for word and letter by letter greater suffering is yet to come."
