The clearly racist term is first recorded in the Kansas Historical Quarterly in 1942 "No `n1gger in the wood pile' here..; white men are at the bottom of this speculation."
A n1gger in the woodpile (or fence) means 'a concealed motive or unknown factor affecting a situation in an adverse way.
With increasingly enlightened attitudes, such expressions have become thankfully less commonplace.
