Lighter socket not working

Hiya i have a '96 Audi A4 and the lighter socket doesnt work, have just bought new unit and fitted it but still nothing. does it need rewiring or is there simple fix

A blown fuse perhaps ?

Does your interior light work? It's usually on the same fuse as the cig.lighter.

Interior light works fine its only the lighter that doesnt

check the fuse, the light is almost never on the same circuit

Not supposed to be a silly question, but are using this as a lighter or socket for something else eg phone charger? If the latter, there is usually a fuse in the 'plug' that you stick in the lighter socket.
