I managed about 5 mins of last night's Wife Swap before switching off...................I knew what to expect but was a glutton for punishment anyway. Does this swamp donkey have any redeeming features whatsoever? Has to be the single most annoying person ever.

And he's a criminal as well - soon to be sentenced for insurance fraud! Jade on the other hand is a likeable, if somewhat loud person, who has been shrewd enough to grab her media opportunity and make the most of it. I know who I'd rather trust!

You can defame on the internet, Scubaboy. Tracing you is quite easy, and the legal punishment can be very severe.

Nothing necessarily defamatory in that Maude; it doesn't look much anyway. There is the defence of fair comment, open to all critics, even amateur ones. He could also try pleading justification (i.e. that it is a true statement). or claim that it does not really lower the complainant's standing in the eyes of right-thinking people because they have a poor reputation already ( which goes to reduce damages to a tiny sum)

Maude as Fred so rightly points out you can't be defaming someone if your critisism is quite clearly held to be fair comment...Let's face it...Her head is as empty the under 16's membership of Gary Glitter's Fan Club......This is just the same as now being able to call Jeffery Archer a serial liar and a cheating lowlife (all term used by a judge to describe him), therefore allowable.......Any redeeming features at all was the question.....On reflection I suppose she has to breathe and sleep occasionally which do manage to shut her yap hole for admittedly small respites from her senseless babbling....Maybe when the camera turns off she really reads Balsac and Proust, and discusses philosophy? Naw, I don't think so either.

she really is unbelievably ugly too. and i'll stand by that statement in court. the "you'll catch semolina" statement was a classic though.

Scubaboy asserts that Ms Goody is a swamp donkey. At its kindest in human terms this is that Ms Goody is a stupid person plunged into inextricable difficulties. However, in US slang now common in the UK, donkey = ass. Many filthy innuendos may be conjured up by prefixing this with swamp. Ms Goody has a right to the reputation that she has gained by her conduct in life. Libel is not only a civil wrong but a crime as well, as it may incite a breach of the peace. What Scubaboy has published is quite unnecessary and can be construed as a malicious desire to vilify Ms Goody. He has no defence in trying to establish the truth of the statement he has made. He must justify it by showing that the public has an interest in knowing that Ms Goody is a swamp donkey. If spite and/or stupidity alone has prompted him to publish this, then off to jail he goes.

Libel, defamation, slander, call it what you like, but some people (Maude) are trying (unsuccessfully incidentally) to be just a bit too clever. This is merely opinion, nothing more, nothing less - I find Jade Goody to be extremely irritating with no redeeming features whatsoever. She never lets anybody have their say, preferring instead to shout over them (I have always found this to be the province of idiots - in the same way that idiots are proud of saying they speak their mind, which is far from an asset).

To publish that a woman is a swamp donkey for countless others to see is not an opinion. It is (serious) libel.
