We've never been to Wales and may go next year. Anyone tell me the nicest area to visit on the coast? Things to do but perhaps not too overly commercialised or dare I say seaside-trashy? Thank you.

depends what your looking for & your age ! we had never been to wales before and chose llandudno, it was excellent, not to rowdy, not to old fashioned! plenty to see and do and not over commercialised,

thanks for that.
Personally I like South Wales, specifically Mumbles and The Gower peninsular. You can't beat it.

looks interesting spudqueen, might try that side this year :-)
Saundersfoot or Ogmore By Sea, stunning
The Mumbles are gorgeous.

I love Tenby too, a lovely little town with lots of little tea shops and curio places, a gorgeous island (Caldey Island)with a monastry and they do some lovely boat trips to see the wildlife including seals and used to do an evening one stopping on a cove for a bbq.

Saundersfoot is close as Dot mentioned.

There are some gorgeous castles you can explore and loads of boat trips elsewhere.

Not too far away are attraction such as the Oakwood Theme Park and Folly Farm, Dinosaur Park if you have kids.

thanks for your answers everyone- you've given me loads to look at!
You must go to Criccieth, mydogs. A lovely little place which happens to sell the best ice-cream (Cadwallader's) in the entire world.

And yes, The Gower is beautiful if you're going south.
North Wales coast is not worth going to. all holiday parks etc. Mini Blackpools.
Angelsey is nice & quiet Penmon beach or Barmouth on cardigan Bay
I agree with Rogk Criccieth or Portmadog, both very good as a base for sightseeing, Barmouth, Harlech, Portmeirion, Snowdon, Caernarvon, Anglesey, Llyn Penninsular, all easy to reach. Huge sandy beach at Black Rock sands, very shallow water . No McDonalds except at Caernarvon.

Yes Ice Cream to die for!
I forgot in this area of Wales Welsh is the locals first language but most can easily change to English.

Pembrokshire, in the very south west, is beautiful.

The area encloses the Pembrokshire Coast National Park

Nearby Gower was Britains first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

As has been said, the Llyn Peninsula in the North West is beautiful and you can stay at Portmadog, then entrance to the Llyn.

Llyn is in the top left of Wales, and shaped a bit like Cornwall. I traveled to the far end, and looked back towards Snowdonia and the view was amazing.
