Salisbury steak

Can anybody enlighten me? I hear it quite a lot on American programmes, often on school lunch menus. What is it exactly?

It's ground..or as we say..minced ... beef shaped to resemble a steak and usually served in brown sauce.
Popular in the American South, where it is traditionally served with gravy and grilled onions and a common staple of school lunches and frozen dinners.
Invented by by an American physician, Dr. J. H. Salisbury and named after him.

Hi Athley & Shaney -
Salisbury steak is sometimes served in schools and there are always TV Dinners of it in our supermarkets - I have never known anyone who made it at home (except the TV Dinners). We call it "mystery meat" - the quality is not as good as fresh hamburger meat.

Thank you both for your excellent answers. Do you know even though it was mentioned with relation to school lunches I've always pictured it differently. Sort of like a steak Diane (which I did think was maybe a bit posh for school but thought maybe American school children had better food) ha ha!!

Its made me wonder also what a sloppy joe is? Sorry to add another question :o)

ps BBW anything called 'mystery meat' can't be good surely????? :oO

In my youth a Sloppy Joe was a big baggy sweater worn over pedal pushers or thick black tIghts !

lol Athley - "mystery meat" is what it tastes like - if you didn't know it was beef of some kind - you might not guess that it was - I think it has a lot of fillers of some kind added to the meat mixture - you can cut it with a fork, no need for a knife. I don't really know anyone who eats it - but if they did, it would probably only be because they didn't have enough money to buy something better! Having said that - as with everything - I am sure there are those who really love it:)
