My car has been sorn for a few months, but Ive decided to get it back on the road.

It insured and MOT'd, and the Tax was ordered on line a few days ago (I have the receipt for this) - but the disc has yet to arrive.

Can I drive the car without the tax disc or not?

If stopped by the police you would be guilty of failing to display a vehicle excise license.

As it is the dvla that sanctions prosecutions of this nature it is unlikely they would do anything if the application for a new one and your payment is "in the system"

In our area however they do regular checks on vehicles and ones without a current VEL are clamped and towed away by the Police/dvla officers and yours car could meet this fate if your application isn't showing in their records

Techincally you have to display the disc. Have you taxed it for January? It would certainly be illegal to drive now if you have taxed it from February (along with the million other untaxed vehicles on the road). The police have access to the DVLA database so it is unlikely you would be prosecuted if you had paid on line (ie for January) simply because it has not arrived. If it has been off road what is the rush? I just taxed mine and the disc arrived on day three.

Thanks for all the replies.

The car has been SORN since last April when its tax ran out and has been parked off the road at the side of my house since then.

I decided last weekend that it was ime to get it back on the road, so I insured it and had it MOT'd on Wednesday.

I had intended to get the RFL fom the post office, but I'm still waiyting for the docs to come through from the insurer, so I thought I'd tax it on line as I know you dont need the docs for that as the process checks for both valid MOT and Insurance electronically.

Theres no real rush I suppose, just that I have spent a bit of money getting the car insured and tested etc AND the RFL is backdated to the beginning of Jan as well - so I just wanted to get some use out of the car sooner rather than later.

I guess the ONLY safe thing to do is wait until the disc comes in the post. Knowng my luck, and combined with a legal system that allows convicted sex offenders to go home - I'd probably get locked away.........
