In 1998 whilst doing an Oral history module at Uni i needed to tape an interview with someone with a historical theme and then transcribe the recording and use it to identify any topics that may warrant future research.
I interviewed my dad about his childhood on a Dairy Farm in Cheshire. he spent two hours talking non stop virtually and went through how he learnt to plough with two horses when he was 11 and lots about his family and the way they lived, how his Mum used to drive a pony and trap into earltown market every week and the Vulcan railway works.
It was recorded on a cassette tape and after i had used it i gave it my Dad and forgot about it.
In Feb 2005 when we all met at the house to arrange the funeral and move some stuff, my son was given the stereo and a lot of tapes dropped from behind it. We played the first one and my dad's voice came out of the speakers, we were all stunned.
I had thought it was lost, my brother-in-law burnt it onto a cd from his puter and we all have our own copy of it, with a cover photo of my Dad at the gates of Badley hall Burtonwood where he lived during World War 2, He went back in 1992 for a visit and we had a pic taken at the arch over the moat.
