The term "morning wood" , according to numerous scholars, first appeared in manuscript on April 15 1173, more or less, in a book entitled "Ye Olde Maritil Responsibilities". It refers to the, then, belief, that the first person to arise in the morning would cut the wood for the morning fire upon which to cook the morning meal.
curlyfilm, I have heard that as well!! apparently if you have a full bladder, you awake with wood, that prevents any leakage until you are fully awake enough to get up and pee, and for those women that didn't know, it is extremely difficult to pee with a stiffy!!
I don't really believe that theory but you never know!!

The explanation I was given, which I have passed on previously is a matter of anatomical layout.
A man's bladder is located next to the Cowper's gland, which is repsonsible for signalling an erection commencement. When lying down asleep, the bladder fills, and presses on the gland, causing an erection, which is why a lot of men wake up with one. When the man gets out of bed, the bladder moves away from the gland, the erection subsides, and he can empty his bladder.
