Certain copy protection methods for audio CDs exploit this and use autorun to auto install their undeletable software. I don't know if you recall the recent fuss over Sonys CD copy protection but they used the Windows autorun feature to install their rootkit.
Ditto for some DVDs that contain their own playing software such as PCFriendly.

Don't switch it off! If you want to stop it AutoRunning (once you've got it to work again) all you need to do to STOP it autorunning is to hold down the SHIFT key until the green light has appeared twice.
To get autorun back on, Google 'TweakUI' and download it from Microsoft's site (get the version for your particular OS). Explore the options it gives you - one of them is to make CDs autorun.
