Total Parenternal Nutrition or TPN is a method of feeding used in hospitals and sometimes in the community. It is used when patients cannot consume food normally (i.e. by mouth) or enterally (i.e. by a tube goin down the nose). Its is given like a drip, into either a special drip placed either in the arm or neck, and is renewed every 24 hours. TPN is a very complete method of providing nutrition, but it is not without its complications. The risk of developing infections through the line is common. It is a very common method of feeding in intensive care units.
