Is this priest a god to Royal Engineers? (5)
Think the answer must be PADRE, and I understand the RE for Royal Engineers, but have never come accross a god called PAD! Can anyone please explain?

Maybe it's initials, P for padre, a, D for deus as used in DV, god willing. Bit of a long shot though.......

P (abbreviation for priest) + a + D (abbreviation for god) + RE (royal Engineers)

The whole is a rather fanciful definition of an army priest, so technically it's an '& lit' clue.
