blood in stools of kitten

I have two bsh kittens 4 and half months old. Both been vaccinated altho female not leukamia. They both use same loo, but I have noticed that occasionally we get puke thru the night and checking the loo, blood and mucous is a soft pooh. So one is having problems? they are both active and putting on weight. Boy is 5lbs and girl 4lbs. They do scavenge for meat off our meals. They are fed on whiskers kitten supermeat. Could this be a dietary problem or something more worrying?

Get them to a vets to get them checked out. Blood in stools is never a good thing. If it was you with the problem you would go to a doctor.

Kittens are prone to colitis and inflamed bowells. However, blood and mucous should always be checked out. It can also be a sign of worms - have you wormed them? It is important to do this monthly up to six months old. I would not think it is anything too serious, as they are both thriving, but you must have them both checked over at the vet. Vets can give you some special food to use for a week or two which will not cause any aggrevation to their tums.

When I got my kitten, now a cat, he was very, very sick and had the same symptoms, and basically acted as if nothing was wrong. He had to spend 3 days in the hospital, he had an intestinal infection among other things,(but that is because he was never taken care of and I found him wandering from a barn), and I had to give him medication. I also had to feed him people baby food, I think it was chicken. He is competly fine now, he is going to be 3 years old. It really isn't anything that medications won't be able to fix. Good Luck!!

Hi Anniekon and mystic-star thank you both very much. I took them to the vets last night. They were not dehydrated, pronounced active and bright. I was told they both had sticky pooh?! Hebe had a temperature so she is on antibiotics, they both are taking some kaolin to settle their bowels and both on chicken and rice for four days. It was suggested to move them onto dry food which I had wanted to, but was swayed by breeder when I bought Duke. Vet wormed them too.(10 days early) but saves me ! So �55 that I was delighted to pay to hear they would soon be ok! Many thanks for such sage advice that helped to banish my worst fears yesterday! x

Take your kittens to the vet. Blood is always serious. You may have to separate them for a day and give them each a litter box. Then you can find out which one is sick. Call your vet and ask if you need to bring a stool sample and how fresh it needs to be. Also your vet may suggest separating them until you know what you are dealing with and if it is contagious. You may be able to drop a sample off for testing while you are finding out which kitten is having the problem. And the vet will let you know what to do from there. Also, get your pet on an all natural holistic food which will help them to fight disease and illness. Grocery store brands often have rendered by products, sugar, and filler of corn; none of which will help your kittens cope with an illness.

well I seem to be going backwards, this morning Hebe puked up all the chicken, duke picks out the chicken and leaves the rice and is starving for anything, caught tearing the bread open! and now they both have bad runs!So I will persevere for another two days with the pills and kaolin yuk and then take another trip down maybe. No blood tho' so I am tentatively thinking it's possibly 'just' dietary problems, but from one bad pooh from one, they have gone to really bad pooh both and undigested puke. Kwinston, where can I get this holistic food from? and what do I look for? I really do appreciate all your help all, as the vet was honest and said that she couldn't be sure with the diagnosis as they both looked so well.

Julianne. Personally I think Kaolin is not a good idea. It just works to change the runny poo to non runny poo, without getting to the root of the problem! Also, cats hate it! You can get a medicine which is basically just lactose. I think it's called Lactolose or something similar. Ask your vet about it. Also, ask the vet about Hills Diet food for poorly tums. They also use it for pussies getting over operations. It is really mild and contains all the essential minerals and salts to keep them going. Make sure they get plenty of water to drink and absolutely NO MILK OR CREAM. Feed them very little and very often to aid their digestion. No more than a desertspoonful in one go. I still don't think it's a serious problem but you must speak to the vet again. Keep us informed. Anniex

Hi Annie, spoke to vet -> keep on. Well for two days, no sick now. Still soft pooh but no blood. Eating the chicken, still don't like the rice! Duke was caught eating the top of the sponge cake, only put down on table for two minutes!Think I will gently introduce some wettish purina kitten nuts as he is clearly hungry! Both mad as hatters so fingers crossed we can get thru this. Will drop in to vets tonight to buy some hills though. Sounds good. No sick to clear up yippee!!!! Juliannex

Nice news Julianne. I'm sure they will be OK. Do try feeding little and often though - it's best for little tums. Even when they are better, don't give them milk. Cats just don't need it. Always keep water down for them - I am sure you know this. Hope Duke kept his sponge cake down - it was obviously too much of a temptation.x
