Hi Ulysses. Have you looked at today's Independent yet?

I have completed it without really understanding the hint in 1a.
As all the across solutions are shades of red I must be missing something.

Sorry about the late reply -- I have only just seen your message. I haven't even started on the crossword yet -- I'll have a look this p.m. and tomorrow a.m. and see what I can come up with --- that is, if nobody else gets there first !
