Why do soldiers have to learn several marchers instep, what has that got to do with defending people or killing people

It's all part of the general doctrine of discipline and order. A disorganised rabble is not a very effective fighting force.

Also it gets recruits used to following orders, when the enemy are shooting at you, you want to get away, when you have been taught drill etc and the section commander starts shouting orders at you, you obey
