Anti-Virus

My computer started telling me that my Internal Virus Database is not up to date; that was immediately after downloading the latest files. I tried all sorts of things to remedy this, but to no avail. I've re-installed the programme, twice, and used System Restore, but I'm still getting nowhere.
When I booted up, the last time, I got a message telling me that some of the Anti-virus programme files couldn't be found, and that the programme wouldn't be active.
Can anyone help me, please?

For the sake of others who may be able to help, what breed of anti-virus are you using?
If it is one of the free ones, it is always best to download the newest version instead of using a previously saved program..

It's Grisoft's free AVG, which I re-installed from their website. So, it's the latest and I got all the downloaded files.

Which version of AVG is it?

If you don't have version 7.5.441 you may have downloaded the wrong one which is about to get the chop.

If you've tried uninstalling the old AVG (and any other anti-virus) and reinstalling the new one then I don't know. It may not be the anti-virus that is causing the problem.

Installing AVG works best when you save it to desktop when you download it, then install it from there. 'running' it straight from the website is not good as it is quite big and is bound to pick up the odd stray bit of info on the way.

I've got the latest version, but now I can't even get rid of it. The 'installation' is simply refused; I've tried every way that I can to get it to uninstall, but it's no use. I'm now back to December, with the 'System Restore', but...Help!!

I think that I've sorted the problem out. After, much messing around with Regedit et al. I finally got rid of every trace of the AVG Anti-Virus programme and installed a new one, called AVL Mini, which found a couple of Trojans, in there. So, I reckon that was the problem...watch this space!
